Pulmonary function test (PFT):
 

Labaid is pioneer in establishing Complete PFT in Bangladesh. Pulmonary function tests are group of tests that measures how well the lungs take in and release air and how well they move gases such as oxygen from the atmosphere into the body’s circulation. Pulmonary function test has many components like
 

• Spirometry 
• Diffusion capacity (DLCO) 
• Body Plethysmography or Body box

Spirometry:   It is done to..

• Diagnose certain types of lung diseases (especially asthma, bronchitis ,emphysema and interstitial lung disease).
• Find the cause of shortness of breath.
• Measure whether exposure to contaminants at work affects lung function.

It also can be done to:

• Assess the effect of medication.
• Measure progress in disease treatment

Diffusion capacity(DLCO):

Allows the doctor to estimate how well the lungs move oxygen from the air into the blood stream. Used in diagnosing interstitial lung disease mostly.

Body plethysmography or Body Box:

It is a very sensitive lung measurement used to detect lung pathology that might be missed with conventional pulmonary function test. This method of obtaining the absolute volume of air within ones lungs may be used in situation where several repeated trials are required. Using body plethysmography doctors can examine the lungs resistance to air flow, distinguish between restrictive and obstructive lung disease, determine the response to bronchodilators and determine bronchial hyperactivity in response to methacholine , histamine.
